The Importance of Learning and Teaching the Quran

Muslims are required to seek knowledge, both spiritual and worldly. This includes reading the Quran regularly. However, many Muslims neglect this obligation, either due to laziness or simply being unaware of its importance. In this article, we’ll explore how learning and teaching the Quran can benefit both Muslims and non-Muslims alike, and why every Muslim should make it an important part of their life and their children’s lives as well.

Essential skills

How to read Arabic, including phonetics, script and tajweed. The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters (consonants) which can be broken down into four basic groups: sibilant sounds, al-hamza (doubled consonants), vowels, diacritical marks. Each letter is represented by a specific combination of dots that are placed above or below a horizontal line. This line is known as the horizon and it represents a straight line between your eyes.

When to start?

The best time to start teaching your children about Islam is when they are born. Studies have shown that babies retain more knowledge if it’s taught before their brains forget it. Children can start learning their prayers at any age, but it should be a priority for every Muslim parent to ensure that his or her child learns how to pray at a young age. An adult who has never been able to learn how to pray or read Arabic can still recite prayers from memory because they were taught them as a child.

Preparing your child

It’s never too early to start teaching children about God. Teach your child how to read Arabic by practicing with them when they are young, and explain that reading Arabic is like learning any other language—it gets easier as they get older. It also helps if you teach your child at home, in a quiet environment where they can concentrate on their lessons. Take frequent breaks throughout reading time; make it fun! Reading Quran shouldn’t be a chore.

Encouraging your child

As parents, it is your responsibility to help guide your children as they grow older. Make sure that you’re always encouraging them and inspiring them. Remind them that learning Qur’an isn’t just a chore, but rather an opportunity to show their appreciation for all that God has blessed them with. Even if they can only read a few verses, explain to them that it is never too early or too late to learn Qur’an.

Good habits

A child’s mind is a sponge. Good habits will shape his/her future, while bad habits will only hinder their growth. What you’re teaching your children today determines how they view tomorrow. In order to ensure that you pass on beneficial traits such as honesty, respect, and discipline, you need to instill good habits into your children while they are young and impressionable. One way to do so is by using everyday activities as learning opportunities for both you and your child.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: The best among you are those who learn Qur’an and teach it. (Al-Bukhari)

Make it fun

It is vital to keep children interested in learning, otherwise they are more likely to give up on it. Introduce a few different games that help them practice reading and understanding what they read. The game can be as simple as guessing which word comes next in a sentence. You could also try teaching your child basic Arabic words so they can pick out words while reading. This will help them learn faster and enjoy it more because they’ll start to understand what they’re reading.

Tips for getting started

Set aside a time and place each day for study. Create an environment that is quiet, warm, comfortable and free from distractions. Seek out friends or family who can help encourage you in your studies, either as teachers or simply as fellow students. Keep track of your progress by charting your daily study time each day so you can see your own personal improvement over time. Seek out support from other Muslim brothers and sisters who are on a similar path to strengthen their faith in God through learning about His word. Finally, be patient with yourself and others around you; it takes time to learn how to read Arabic letters fluently!
